Letters from our Patients and their Families

Dear Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital,

Following an X-ray, we met with Dr. Andrew Simpson. Dr. Simpson’s diagnosis, while alarming and not what we wanted to hear, turned out to be perfectly accurate, enabling me to get the surgery and treatment I needed. That surgery should enable me to make a full recovery. Dr. Simpson has my eternal gratitude for his knowledge and for his ability to communicate in a direct but tactful manner. Bravo!

Dear Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital,

Dr. Isaac surpassed my wildest expectations. I have received many injections in the past in several other pain clinics. Never before have I encountered a doctor who knew so much about my rare and largely misunderstood genetic disorder. He spoke with me during the procedure and imparted new and very thoughtful information. Furthermore, with my consent, had me demonstrate some the characteristics of my condition an in-training resident. He understood the plight of a patient in this Western world medical model where there are few departments that address the multiplicity of problems for those with a multisystem disorder

Dear Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital,

I was really impressed how well the entire staff communicated with each other. Each new nurse or technician knew what problems I was experiencing and only had to ask a few questions to make sure that we were on the same page. Additionally, each nurse asked if there was anything I wanted to add regarding my problem. They made my experience wonderful… they were real professionals and they were real compassionate people. I felt that I was not only being treated at a first-class institution but that I was being treated by real human caregivers

Dear Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital,

My nurse’s first name was Kelly. She was exceptional! There was a pretty stressful incident happening outside my room and she remained calm and made me feel safe. She carried on with gathering my information while keeping me comfortable... blanket, socks, humor. Kelly was everything I needed her to be. She was the perfect amount of careful, thoughtful, kind and funny. I felt informed, heard and really well cared for. Thank you, Kelly! Thank you, BWFH!

Dear Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital,

I felt encouraged and honestly excited to carry out “homework” before each next appointment. The Medbridge app was terrific, specifically its helpful short demonstration clips of exercises and its optional accountability recording. I also was able to practice each exercise in front of my therapist following his demonstration of each before heading home to rely only on Medbridge. Follow-up questions were welcomed. The importance of form, how various muscles work together to accomplish an overall strengthening of weakness relevant to my condition and, importantly, the safe progression of difficulty for exercises were explained well. In a split second I would recommend PT at BWFH and even faster my specific physical therapist, Brian Chen. He is truly an outstanding therapist, teacher and individual in every respect.

Dear Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital,

Dr. Jonathan Strong worked with me as a doctor-patient team as well as provided excellent referrals to specialists I desperately needed for my rare conditions which have seen me passed from physician to physician for far too long. I would also like to mention the nurse that I had that night as well. Unfortunately I can’t remember her name, but she also triaged me and was the first person to put me at ease when I came into the ED. I told her that being in the hospital makes me anxious and she began to joke with me and made me feel like I was more than just a number on a conveyor belt. She was my nurse in the ED as well and did not forget my fears. She was very fast in getting me treated and checked in on me frequently, treating me like a friend. I am so very relieved to have had both of these caregivers during my visit. It’s been many years that I’ve had to deal with my condition. I’ve been in the hospital a lot and unfortunately some healthcare professionals aren’t always kind to the “frequent flyers.” I am extremely grateful for people like my nurse and Dr. Strong! Thank you!

Dear Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital,

I was extremely pleased with my experience at BWFH. I was nervous and had concerns about after care, and the doctors and nurses listened and reassured me about all my concerns and took care of them promptly. I have had a good amount of surgeries in the past at other hospitals. BWFH was by far my best experience. I would definitely recommend them to friends and family and would go back there anytime I need to. I want to give a special thank you to the OR nurse that took care of me before I went into surgery. She was amazing, so so kind and sweet. She really made me feel comfortable and not nervous about the surgery.

Dear Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital,

My nursing care was exceptional. Phyllis prepared me for surgery in both a professional and friendly way that made it much easier to relax, feel confident and be ready for surgery. I appreciated her attention to detail and speed, but was most impressed how she prepped me intellectually and emotionally for surgery. Though I was under anesthesia for most of my surgical experience, Mary was reassuring, giving me great bits of advice coupled with her confident and positive attitude. Lastly, Danielle made recovery so much easier for me and my wife. She was a college of knowledge on how I could best address so many aspects of my recovery at the hospital and at home (clothing, medicine, ice, timing, etc.). I was so prepared and no guidance was unused. To top it off, she was so pleasant and kind with her care. You could use all three nurses (who each were immensely helpful in different ways) in a training video. I wish everyone could receive such care. And as you know, Dr. Shoji and his team were just as great as expected.

Dear Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital,

When I arrived for surgery I was extremely nervous, overwhelmed, stressed and terrified. From the moment I stepped into the building things started to change. I won’t lie I wanted to leave before I checked in. I didn’t want to be there. I was so scared. I feel horrible I don’t remember who checked me in. She had a lot going on before me and I was worried how she would interact with me. Well, she was the reason my stress level started going down. She treated me with so much respect and understanding. Then when I was brought into the area where they prepped me for surgery it was not what I expected. Everything was smooth, everyone one was respectful, everyone was compassionate, everyone went above and beyond. By the time I talked to the doctor I forgot I wanted to leave. I felt that I was in good hands. Do I ever want surgery again? No. However, if I do I would love to have the same staff. These professionals are a rare gem. Thank you!!!!

Dear Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital,

I’ve been seeing Angela Serig for several years now and she is just excellent. She’s extremely thorough, attentive, patient, generous with her time and extremely cooperative. She recognizes that this is sort of a cooperative process between the two of us. I think that she’s just exceptional and a treasured asset. I hope she never leaves the department.

Dear Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital,

I was brought to BWFH by ambulance. When I was bought to the room I was seen immediately by a nurse, PA and doctor. They took a history and immediately addressed my pain level and did not hesitate to give me pain meds. I did not have to wait for X-rays and procedures to be done. The X-ray technician was very sensitive and caring about my pain level. I ended up needing surgery and they set me up with a surgeon. The staff in the OR couldn’t be nicer. I met with the doctor and each member of the team. They each took the time to introduce themselves and explain their role. The post-op staff was very caring as I woke up. My experience from beginning to end was stellar! I would highly recommend BWFH for wonderful care.

Dear Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital,

My family and I have had all our care provided at the main campus of the Brigham. I was a bit apprehensive about having care at BWFH since it is much smaller. But, after having a procedure there, I would highly recommend going to BWFH for surgical care. The facility was clean. The staff was very professional. The atmosphere was calming. And my surgeon was great.

Dear Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital,

I just want to say everyone I came in contact with was so caring and helpful. Before my surgery, Anne was my nurse. She was clearly competent, kind and very aware of what was going on. She anticipated my needs and kept me informed of delays. She really helped to ease a lot of my anxiety and my husband’s while we waited. My post-op my nurse was Moe. She was amazing. I was so out of it, but she made me feel so comfortable. I’m sure I had her explain my post-op instructions a few times, and she happily answered all of our questions. Another thing to mention is that in both locations the staff clearly worked well together. If my nurse wasn’t available, whoever was close by was happy to help with whatever was needed. It was refreshing to see. Thank you for making my surgery day go so much smoother than I expected.

Dear Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital,

Going in, I was feeling quite comfortable with what I thought would happen. The reality of the whole experience has far exceeded my expectations. Four days later I find that I have been experiencing very little pain and I can move about and do my exercises with ease. I have been telling everyone I talk to that if they have a bad knee they should get to Dr. Fitz at BWFH ASAP for a great outcome.

Dear Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital,

I just wanted to say how spectacular the unit was. I’ve been coming to your breast imaging center for over 35 years. It was really nice to see the new beautiful, clean, lovely airy space for the breast center and it was a delight all around changing just in the room. The whole thing was beautifully set up and you’re to be congratulated. I was nervous about the changes at first, but I was so happy when I left.

Dear Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital,

My dad was the patient recenlty and his nurse, Tessy, was amazing! She was very attentive to his needs and concerned about making him comfortable after his procedure. She explained everything she was doing as she was doing it. She made us feel very comfortable with the process. She was very detail-oriented while keeping us engaged with questions about our family. Tessy went over the discharge paperwork line by line and made sure we both understood what was expected and where we could reach out for help if he felt worse that evening after discharge. She made a point of helping him get dressed and wheeled him out to our car. Her professionalism and caring/nurturing attitude and personality was so very refreshing. My dad and I were so blown away with her kindness and treatment we felt like we were her family. Please be sure to reward Tessy in the best possible way and truly recognize her for being such an amazing asset to your institution!

Dear Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital,

I cannot say enough about BWFH. The doctors took their time with me. They were so thorough and on top of my care. I want to express that really mattered and I hope that these two people are recognized for their care for me. The one that especially made a difference in my care is the nurse named Ian. When I first saw that I was going to have a male nurse helping me after a breast surgery, I was a little uncomfortable. Wow... did that chance fast. I have had eight surgeries in my life time. He is the BEST that I have ever had. He was soft-spoken, which I found very comforting when I was in such a vulnerable position. He went out of his way to see if I was comfortable, explain things, tell me the results of my blood tests, follow-up, ask questions of my doctors when I expressed concern, keep me warm, be gentle and was just very professional, caring and on his game. He gave me ear plugs and a mask to cover my eyes to sleep. Under the circumstances, I joked about how it was like a spa treatment. In reality, I felt protected and so well taken care of. Thank you so much Ian. I will forever remember how well you treated me. I am crying as I write this because it was one of the most emotional times of my life. Also thank you to Trish, who sat with me when I couldn’t help but cry when I first changed into my gown. She took so much time to care for me, wrapped her arm around me and explained how what I was feeling was totally understandable. Later, I received a sweet note from her. Thank you so much.

Dear Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital,

Once again, it was wonderful having Dr. Carty as my surgeon. He is kind, compassionate, skilled, gentle and takes his time to listen to my questions and concerns. My pre-op nurse, Tina, was wonderful. She was kind, gentle and took my concerns seriously. She listened attentively when I spoke and treated me with the utmost respect. She followed through with notations in my chart when I experienced an allergic reaction to chlorhexidine and made sure the OR staff was aware also. My post-op nurse (so sorry I can’t remember her name!) was wonderful also. She too treated me with tremendous kindness and respect. She took my complaints of nausea seriously and made sure I had supplies when I left in case I got sick on my way home. I have had trouble with anesthesia in the past and this was the first time I have felt not rushed (in my opinion, dangerously so) by the post-op nurse to leave the hospital. This nurse was supportive, helpful, understanding and loving.

Dear Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital,

I would like to thank the whole surgical team starting with Dr. Fitz, Kelly and the office staff. The pre-op team, surgical team and post-op team for the caring professionalism they provided for me. I was put at ease the moment I arrived at pre-op and observed the nursing team working together in my preparation for surgery along with the surgical and post-op teams. As a patient observing the genuine care all the teams provided means so much in what can be a nervous time for most patients. I still have a way to go before I reach my goals of returning to activities I love to do and feel the Physical Therapy program will return me to those goals. I want to thank everyone involved in my care and wish you all the very best.
