October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For women in the United States, breast cancer is the second most common cancer.* That means most of us know a person affected by the disease, and many of us love a person affected by the disease. To protect yourself and those you love, the experts at Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital’s Breast Imaging and Diagnostic Center urge all women 40 and over to complete their annual screening mammogram.

"Annual screening mammograms are the first line of defense against breast cancer," says BWFH Chief of Radiology and Brigham and Women's Hospital Division Chief of Breast Imaging Dylan C. Kwait, MD. "If cancer is detected early, women have the best possible chance for a good outcome. We encourage all women age 40 and over to have an annual screening mammogram."

Why schedule my annual screening mammogram at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital’s Breast Imaging and Diagnostic Center?

Since its establishment in 1971, the Breast Imaging and Diagnostic Center at Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital, which opened in its new location just last year, has cared for hundreds of thousands of patients and currently provides screening mammography services to approximately 20,000 women every year. Known for its patient-centered approach to breast cancer detection, prevention, patient and staff education, research and treatment, it is one of the leading centers for breast health care in the country.

"All mammograms use 3D technology here and are read by Brigham and Women’s board-certified subspecialist radiologists who have devoted their careers exclusively to breast imaging," says Dr. Kwait. "My colleagues and I are leading experts in the field and we carefully review your images and provide your results in a timely manner."
