BWFH Pulse Now Available in 150 Languages
Each year, at their annual Medical Staff Meeting, Brigham and Women’s Hospital recognizes its most valued clinicians with its annual awards ceremony. At this year’s event, several BWFH providers were among the honorees.
BWFH’s APP in Excellence Award was established to recognize and celebrate the important contributions Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) make to the hospital. At a recent celebration, the annual APP in Excellence Award was given to Chief NP of Orthopedic/Spine Surgery Katie Killinger, MSN, BSN, NP-C.

Each year, perioperative leaders from across the country gather for the OR Manager Conference where participants share best practices, network and earn continuing education credits. At this year’s event, held recently in Chicago, Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital’s same-day discharge program was a featured topic during the breakout sessions. Read more.
In what it calls “the first ranking to evaluate cost efficacy” for more than 3,000 U.S. hospitals, the Lown Institute released a list of the top 50 hospitals for cost efficiency, highlighting those hospitals that were able to achieve high-quality outcomes—and low mortality—with low cost to Medicare. What is mindfulness and why is it being discussed so often now? If you’re confused, you are not alone. In the latest EAP news feature, “Why is everyone talking about mindfulness?,” Darshan Mehta, MD, MPH, a Mass General Brigham expert on mind-body medicine, provides an introduction for those who may be reluctant to consider mindfulness and are struggling with stress and an inability to enjoy what they are doing while they are doing it. The article describes various options for practicing mindfulness on your own terms.
This holiday season, Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital’s Community Health and Wellness Department is spreading holiday cheer within the community by adopting the families of the students at the JP Manning Elementary School who are most in need. The Boston Bruins and Mass General Brigham have announced a multi-year partnership that will make Mass General Brigham the Official Sports Medicine and Orthopedics Provider for the Boston Bruins. Drop off a new, unwrapped, non-violent toy at the 1st or 3rd floor Information Desk. All toys will be donated to the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves Toys for Tots program. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Massachusetts has an urgent need for mentors to work with students in two Boston public schools: the Edward M. Kennedy Academy for Health Careers and Madison Park Technical Vocational High School. Volunteering for the BBBSEM Mentor 2.0 Program doesn’t take much time, but it does make a huge difference in a child’s life. BBBSEM needs mentors of all genders, but particularly men. Join the growing number of employees in the Path to Lifestyle Change program who are learning to lose weight, increase activity and prevent type 2 diabetes in an interactive setting. This program, offered by AllWays Health Partners and the experts at the Mass General Diabetes Center, is a covered benefit for AllWays members and family who are at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes. The January 2022 group will meet on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. Additional groups will follow, as we form groups when 10 to 15 interested and eligible people can meet at the same time. Interested? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) expanded eligibility for COVID-19 booster shots to include all adults. Click here to see the CDC’s announcement on who should receive a booster shot. Eligible individuals may choose which vaccine they receive as a booster shot. Learn more on the CDC website.
Mass General Brigham employees are encouraged to receive their booster shot at a location in their local community. Many sites, including CVS and Walgreens, are offering free booster shots. Visit vaccines.gov, mass.gov or vaccines.nh.gov to find a location near you. You can also text your zip code to 438829 or call 1-800-232-0233.
Mass General Brigham is also offering limited booster shot appointments to employees and patients who are eligible per the CDC’s recommendation. Eligible employees may schedule their booster shot appointment at a Mass General Brigham vaccine clinic via COVID Pass and are encouraged to check back for availability regularly.
Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital’s Emerging Leaders Committee invites you to attend a Q&A with Vice President of Clinical Services Susan Dempsey. Susan will discuss her background, education and career steps, and offer advice and insight into a career in healthcare to any early careerists. Newton-Wellesley Hospital and Quality and Patient Experience’s Substance Use Disorders Initiative are pleased to offer to “‘Half and Half’ X-Waiver Training” on the fundamentals of addiction medicine, buprenorphine, opioid use disorders and practical patient management to all Mass General Brigham prescribers (physicians, NPs, PAs, CNMs, CNSs and CRNAs) interested in using buprenorphine treatment protocols to treat opioid use disorder. Non-prescribers are also welcome to join the training which will be held virtually on Wednesday, December 15, from 7:30 to 11:30 am. For more information, click here. Register by Friday, December 10.
