Construction Update: December 4 to 15, 2023
Third-Floor Hillside Garage
On the west side of the garage, excavation work continues. This work is expected to be complete in early December. Fence installation along the top of the hill begins December 4. On the east side of the garage, work is ongoing on the concrete foundations. At this time, continued truck traffic can be expected.
Inpatient Addition
Work is progressing for the inpatient addition with the structural steel work now complete and pre-cast installation on going. On December 6, concrete pouring will take place between 6 am and midnight and on December 9 and 10 curtain wall installation will begin on the new stair tower facing the Allandale Street side of the building. Staff and patients should expect intermittent disruptions to the loop road during this time. The curtain wall installation will continue through January. Currently, the contractor is using electric heaters inside the building to maintain the proper temperature for their work. Once the curtain wall progresses, noise from this equipment will be diminished.
Street Enhancements
Work continues on Centre Street to allow for pedestrian improvements and modernized signaling at the intersection of Allandale and Centre Street, as well as a bicycle lane on Centre Street. The work will include the infrastructure installation for the Blue Bike station, which is expected to be fully in place in the spring. The work on Centre Street will require the occasional closure of sidewalks and traffic lanes, but police details will be on site to minimize disruptions and maximize the safety of all road users.
Please note, work is underway on Centre Street to replace the existing sidewalk. Work began on upper half of the block between the stairs and Allandale Road. The second phase began on November 13 and includes the north section of Centre Street from the stairs and Whitcomb Ave, as well as the south corner of Allandale Road and Centre Street. This work is projected to be complete on December 22 and will be followed by the installation of a new signaling system on Centre Street that will allow for better programming to help improve the flow of traffic.
Interior and Roof
Inside the hospital and on the roof, work is also underway to prepare for the new inpatient addition. Please expect that there will be increased noise and possible disturbances while construction activity continues. Individual departments within the hospital that will be directly impacted will be notified of any possible disruptions to operations ahead of time in order to properly prepare and mitigate impacts to patients, visitors and staff.
