Construction Update: May 29-June 9, 2023

Third-Floor Hillside Garage

Excavation work for the new garage continues. At this time, continued truck traffic can be expected. Additionally, asbestos abatement work continues. Staff, patients and visitors will see signage related to this work and are asked to obey all posted notices. We have been working with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection to come up with a containment and removal plan. This work will strictly follow all MADEP regulations. Misting to control dust and monitoring of air will be in place beginning Tuesday, May 30. The company performing this asbestos removal has recently and safely completed similar work at Somerville High School, which is adjacent to a high-density neighborhood and a school.

Inpatient Addition

Work continues to prepare the site for the new inpatient addition.

Centre Street Enhancements

Construction of the new accessible ramp onto BWFH’s campus from Centre Street continues, as well as the removal of the traffic island on Centre-Allandale Streets. Please note, one outbound lane onto Centre Street will be closed from 8 am to 3 pm on Wednesday, May 31. This work will be critical to allow the start of construction for pedestrian improvements and signaling at the intersection of Allandale and Centre Street and a new raised bicycle lane on Centre Street, which should begin on June 1. The work will include the infrastructure installation for the Blue Bike station, which is expected to be fully in place in the fall. The work on Centre Steet and Allandale will require the closure of sidewalks and traffic lanes, but police details will be on site to minimize disruptions and maximize the safety of all road users.

Interior and Roof

Inside the hospital and on the roof, work is also underway to prepare for the new inpatient addition. Please expect that there will be increased noise and possible disturbances while this enabling work continues. Individual departments within the hospital that will be directly impacted will be notified of any possible disruptions to operations ahead of time in order to properly prepare and mitigate impacts to patients, visitors and staff.
