COVID-19 Updates

COVID-19 Testing Site Reopens at Brookside

What: COVID-19 Testing & Social Determinants of Health Screening

What days: Wednesdays and Thursdays 9 am – 4 pm

When does it start? August 5 and 6

Who:

  • We will test both our patients as well as the community
  • We will test adults and some children. We try and coach families to get the adults in the house tested and then assume the same results apply to the kids. There are some circumstances where families want/need their children tested. We will do the test for kids IF it’s necessary and IF the child can hold still.
  • We will test people who have symptoms or known exposure
  • We will test people who need letters for work, camp, school, daycare, and travel
  • We will NOT do pre-op testing for patients of Mass General Brigham. We will refer them back to their surgical/procedural provider.
  • We will do pre-op testing for individuals who are NOT patients of Mass General Brigham.

Will there be anything else at the testing site?

  • Screening for Social Determinants of Health
  • Voter registration
  • Care kit distribution
  • Food/gift card resources
  • PENDING: diapers/wipes, school readiness kits, hygiene kits

Massachusetts Travel Order Now in Effect

The Governor’s Executive Order is now in effect, which offers new guidance for those returning to Massachusetts from out-of-state travel. The new order will affect members of our workforce who travel to a state other than Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey or Hawaii. While travel outside of this region is strongly discouraged, all employees must consider the following guidelines:

Prior to travel (except for the state’s listed above)

Employees must attest to their travel in advance in this Travel Attestation.

Upon return from travel and before being able to return to work

Employees will need to do the following:

  • Complete the required Massachusetts Travel Form.
  • Demonstrate proof of a negative COVID-19 test by one of the options below:
    • Obtain testing before returning to Massachusetts as long as the test was obtained no more than 72 hours prior to arrival in Massachusetts. Results should be sent to Occupational Health at phsohscovid19@partners.org.
    • Call Occupational Health Central Services at 617-724-8100 either before travel or within 24 hours after travel to schedule a test at one of the Mass General Brigham testing sites.

Employees must use their own paid time off (PTO) while they wait for COVID-19 test results, if not obtained prior to returning. If the test is negative, the employee can return to work immediately. If the test is positive, the employee must stay home from work and follow the return to work protocol in our current Return to Work Criteria. If testing is not obtained, employees must quarantine for 14 days after returning from travel and may not work in any of our worksites during this time. Employees who have approved remote work arrangements may work remotely during the quarantine period.

As a health care organization, we all share the same belief that protecting our patients and one another by avoiding trips to potential hotspots is the top priority. Thank you for your commitment to do everything possible in order to maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff.

New Guidance Regarding Eye Protection in Clinical Settings

Mass General Brigham’s Universal Mask Policy has been updated to require eye protection in all clinical encounters, and is now the Universal Mask and Eye Protection Policy. This updated policy is consistent with recent recommendations from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, which now recommends universal eye protection, regardless of community prevalence of COVID-19.

  • Universal eye protection gives employees interacting with patients for more than 10 minutes at less than 6 feet additional protection if a patient is not wearing a mask, removes their mask unexpectedly, or if the employee needs to remove the patient’s mask to examine their mouth/throat area.
  • Making this policy apply across all clinical encounters will support uniform practice and is more reliable than situation-specific directives (e.g., adding eye protection when patient is unmasked). This policy therefore applies to all patients, even if the patient has tested negative for COVID-19.
  • Institutions have until August 10, 2020 to implement the updated policy.

For further details please read the full policy.

Should you need eye protection while at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital, you can visit the PPE distribution center in suite 5B anytime between 6 am and 11:30 pm. Distribution center staff are only allowed to issue one set of eye protection per employee and will continue to monitor PPE usage by employee. As a reminder, per Mass General Brigham’s Extended Use, Reuse and Conservation of PPE policy, eyewear can be used without time limit and cleaned and stored as long as they are not damaged and retain their structural integrity. Please note that personal glasses are never suitable for eye protection.

For Clinicians: Updates to Mass General Brigham COVID-19 Related Policies
We regularly review COVID-19-related clinical policies to ensure that they reflect the best available published guidance and take into account the current clinical situation at our institutions. Policy decisions are made collaboratively and are based on ongoing risk-assessments of the evolving COVID-19 pandemic. On July 10, updates were made to the testing criteria. Moving forward, updates will be sent out only when changes have been made. For a list of current active policies and associated guidance documents, visit the COVID-19 clinical policies site.
