Biomedical Services Update

As of October 1, 2020, Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital will transition to Brigham Biomedical Engineering support.  We anticipate a seamless transition as the Brigham Biomedical Engineering team learns our systems and our care environment.

We are grateful to Julia Shannon and the entire TRIMEDX Biomed group for the support of our clinical activities.  They have provided years of incredibly responsive, high quality service in our clinical areas and will continue to support us through this transition.

Ed Pitts, Executive Director of Support Services, Michael Fraai, BWH’s Executive Director of Biomedical Engineering, Peggy Duggan, Chief Medical Officer, are working to create a smooth transition. Please reach out with any questions or concerns.

The DAISY Nurse Leader Award annually recognizes the incredible work that nurse leaders do every day. At Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital, nurse leaders include Nurse Directors, Nursing Supervisors, Nurse Educators and Program Managers in the Department of Nursing. Cell Phone Charging in Patient Rooms

Following a recent event that resulted in spark and burning of outlet within a patient room, please be reminded that patients should not be plugging any charging devices for a cell phone, tablet, computer, etc. into the head wall outlets in patient rooms. These outlets should be used for medical equipment only. If a patient needs to charge an electrical device, they should use the outlets near the foot of the bed.

COVID-19 Updates

COVID-19 Vaccine Forum

On Thursday, July 23 from 7 to 8:30 pm there will be an online discussion and "town hall" with Dr. Lindsey Baden, the lead researcher on the upcoming COVID vaccine trial at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Topics around vaccine research development, COVID vaccine trial, and pertinent questions from our community members will be addressed.

The link to the forum can be found HERE and at www.bwhccw.org. Participants are encouraged to submit questions beforehand to info@bwhccw.org and will also be able to ask questions during the event.

Proper PAPR Storage

Please follow the proper PAPR storage guidelines in order to conserve this important hospital resource.  Per recommendations, the blower unit should be wiped down and stored in the storage bin that it was given to you in.  PAPRs should never be hung on IV poles, left on counters or stored in anything but the bin it was issued in.

If you require help with your PAPR use during your shift, continue to use Vocera (or call extension 2199) and ask for PAPR HELP. Be sure to report any difficulties you have with the PAPR unit or batteries to the Distribution Center staff when you return them to Suite 5B at the end of your shift.

Online Prescreen for Patients and Visitors Now Available

In order to streamline the screening process at BWFH, we have integrated the Mass General Brigham Prescreen for patients and visitors. Mass General Brigham Prescreen is an online symptom and risk screening tool for all patients and visitors entering a Mass General Brigham facility. Patients and visitors will be required to complete the screening on the day of their visit prior to being allowed entry into the hospital.  Please encourage your patients and visitors to utilize this tool to make their entry into the hospital more efficient: https://prescreen.massgeneralbrigham.org.

Voicemail Scheduling for Fit Testing Now Available

In addition to the online form requesting a fit test that was announced last week, employees who don’t have access to a computer can now contact the voicemail line with their request.  Employees can call 617-983-7028 and leave their name, department, contact number and shift hours and a member of the fit testing team will call them back to schedule an appointment.

For Clinicians: Updates to Mass General Brigham COVID-19 Related Policies

We regularly review COVID-19-related clinical policies to ensure that they reflect the best available published guidance and take into account the current clinical situation at our institutions. Policy decisions are made collaboratively and are based on ongoing risk-assessments of the evolving COVID-19 pandemic. On July 10, updates were made to the testing criteria. Moving forward, updates will be sent out only when changes have been made. For a list of current active policies and associated guidance documents, visit the COVID-19 clinical policies site.
