Safety Highlight of the Week

Last week, a safety report was submitted after an insect was discovered in a sensitive procedural space. Staff worked to maintain a sterile field and there was no impact to the patient, however the staff needed to breakdown and set up the materials a second time to provide infection control protection. In the News: “Combating COVID-19’s Cancer Screening Dip”

New research by Brigham and Women’s/Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is showing just how dramatically cancer screenings dropped at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, potentially delaying thousands of diagnoses. Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital urological surgeon Quoc-Dien Trinh, MD, recently spoke with NBC News about their findings. Click here to watch the report.

Information Security and Privacy Tips: Safeguard Your Vacation

As restrictions lift, you may be thinking about traveling this summer. Wherever you go, we urge you to follow the current local and state COVID-19 safety guidelines. We also encourage you to take precautions around other threats that are associated with travel, including cybersecurity.

  • Watch for scams and phishing emails. The uptick in scams related to COVID-19 is likely to continue through the summer. Remember, criminals take advantage of current events to create realistic scams.
  • Immediately report any lost or stolen devices, such as a smartphone or laptop, to the Mass General Brigham IS Service Desk before contacting your phone carrier.
  • Be wary of free Wi-Fi hotspots. Public Wi-Fi is typically not secure. If you can, use Mass General Brigham VPN or your cell phone service instead of free Wi-Fi. Also, limit any use of sites, including Mass General Brigham, which require a login or personal information.
  • Disable the location tracking feature on your devices. Many applications automatically tag your location when in use. Don’t make it easier for criminals to identify where you are.
  • Educate others. Share your security tips with others who may not be as tech-savvy. Assist family members in tightening up their cybersecurity practices.

For more information, contact your Information Security or Privacy Officer.

Infection Preventionist Brittany Herrick, BSN, RN, is on call to address concerns and answer questions.

How Patients Can Get Their Vaccines

Mass General Brigham will be closing its dedicated vaccine clinics in the coming weeks. As a result, we will be piloting performing patient vaccination in select primary care and specialty clinics, and will continue to offer vaccinations through mobile efforts. We are also exploring other options to meet the needs of our unvaccinated patients. In addition, vaccinations are also available through city and town clinics, local pharmacies and state vaccination sites for eligible patients. Visit the Mass.gov website for locations or dial 2-1-1.

How Employees Can Get Their Vaccines

Employees can schedule dose 1 vaccine appointments at any of our dedicated vaccination sites using COVID Pass until the last dose 1 day closure dates noted above. For employees unable to use COVID Pass seeking dose 1, with the last option on 6/30 (initial vaccination appointments), please call the COVID Call Center at 781-960-1567 to schedule an appointment. Employees may take time during their workday to get vaccinated and should coordinate with their manager. Wentworth-Douglass Hospital employees wishing to receive the COVID-19 vaccine can now self-schedule via COVID Pass (vaccinations are provided based on appointment openings at Prompt Care at Pease during their weekly vaccination clinics, Wednesdays and Thursday 2 to 4 pm). If you are unable to get vaccinated at one of our clinics prior to their closing dates, employees are encouraged to access state sites, local pharmacies and other COVID-19 vaccine venues. Soon employees will also be able to receive their COVID-19 vaccine at select Occupational Health clinics on a limited basis. Other options will be available in the fall, such as at flu clinics. More information will be forthcoming.
