Safety highlight of the month

RLDatix, Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital’s safety reporting system, allows any staff member to report a safety event or a patient care event that is not consistent with routine hospital operations or patient care. Safety reporting serves as documentation of incident follow up, lets leaders, Risk Management and Patient Safety track patterns of issues reported and allows a multidisciplinary approach to improve care and patient safety. To learn more about safety reporting, read the latest edition of Last Month in Patient Safety.

A Message from Spiritual Care Services

Nirvana, or Parinirvana, Day, celebrated on February 15, is a Mahayana Buddhist holiday that celebrates the day on which the Buddha achieved Nirvana. Buddhism teaches that Nirvana is the end of the cycle of death and rebirth as well as the end of suffering. Nirvana may be translated as “extinguishing” or “blowing out” as you would a candle. Many Buddhists celebrate the holiday by meditating, a cornerstone of the Buddhist tradition, visiting Buddhist temples or monasteries and sharing food and exchanging gifts. This day also encourages reflection on deceased loved ones, on our own death and on our immortality as we seek awakening and ultimately Nirvana.

Beginning at sundown on February 17, Laylat al-Isra’wa al-Mi’raj commemorates the Prophet Muhammad’s ascension (al-Mi’raj) to heaven following his night’s journey (al Isra’) from Mecca to Jerusalem. This miracle took place after the Prophet faced a Year of Sorrow during which he experienced loss, rejection and violence. His ascension to heaven brought him into the Divine Presence and the source of all comfort and hope. During his ascension, he was also instructed on the importance of reciting prayer (salat) five times a day. This day in the Islamic tradition is a reminder that with every hardship, there will be peace. Muslims observing the holiday will often read the story of the Prophet Muhammad’s nighttime journey and ascension at the mosque or at home.

Saturday, February 18, is the Hindu holiday of Maha Shivaratri, which translates to “The Great Night of Shiva.” This solemn eve honors Lord Shiva whose Dance of Bliss creates, preserves, destroys and recreates the world. Lord Shiva is considered the first and greatest of all yogis, making Maha Shivaratri a time to tap into the ultimate purpose of yoga: connection with the Divine. To observe the holiday, Hindus will engage in fasting, meditation and worship and enjoy feasts and festivals on the following day.
