Held recently in Philadelphia, the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) National Teaching Institute’s (NTI) 2023 Conference is the AACN’s premier conference for progressive and critical-care nurses. This year, Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital’s Nurse Director for the ICU, Dialysis and Respiratory Estier Sayegh, MBA, BSN, RN, CNRN, PCCN, CCRN, and ICU Clinical Leader Ellen McCarthy, DNP, MSN, RN, CCRN, were in attendance to present their poster “Nurse Driven Palliative Care Consults in the ICU.”

“We were surprised to see that we were the only poster presentation from Boston,” says McCarthy. “Our poster was well attended; one nurse even said that the information we provided him was the best information he had received at NTI so far.”

Sayegh received similar feedback on her department’s work. “A nurse from Seattle said to me, ‘This is what we need in our ICU to provide the best quality care for our patients.’ The nurses were touched with our poster and very happy to see work like this being done,” she says.

For both McCarthy and Sayegh, the opportunity to share best practices and learn from the best practices of others is always valuable. “It is always inspiring and motivating to see what nurses are doing to advance nursing practice and improve patient outcomes and we were thrilled to be a part of that experience,” says McCarthy. “We returned with some ideas to improve nursing care here at BWFH.”

In addition to the poster presentations during the Critical Care Exposition, NTI 2023 featured more than 200 sessions and SuperSessions with keynote speakers including soccer star Abby Wambach, diversity, inclusion and mentorship expert Janice Omadeke and Arab-American comedian Maysoon Zayid.
