Gregory Endoscopy Centre clinical nurse receives DAISY Award

Mary Hourihan, MSN, RN, CGRN

Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital’s Department of Nursing recently honored Gregory Endoscopy Centre clinical nurse Mary Hourihan, MSN, RN, CGRN, with a DAISY Award.

Hourihan was nominated by Gregory Endoscopy Centre staff nurse Mary Morris, BSN, RN, CGRN, who wrote in her nomination letter:

Mary is incredibly organized with training staff. Yearly, we have a skills day which she organizes, as well as demonstrates and provides hands-on use of endoscopy equipment for each staffer. Mary is an excellent resource for procedure and application. She is also an active member and lecturer at the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates (SGNA). She has also guided and successfully assisted four nurses to certification! Mary encourages and grows each of her staffers’ knowledge. She emphasizes the importance that each patient has an excellent experience, and our Press Ganey results exemplify this. Mary informs staff with bulletin boards instructing us how we compare to national statistics. Mary has also initiated and oversees endoscopy scope testing to ensure optimum patient safety. This is her own initiative.

Hourihan was presented with her DAISY Award by members of nursing leadership, members of the Nursing Professional Recognition and Advancement Committee and her supportive co-workers. “I am incredibly honored to receive the DAISY Award, especially given its history and its emphasis on compassionate care. I am fortunate to work in a superb hospital with wonderful colleagues who exemplify excellence in patient care every day,” she says.

The DAISY Award, established by the DAISY Foundation, is named in memory of J. Patrick Barnes who died at the age of 33 from Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), an auto-immune disease. The Barnes Family was inspired by the care that Patrick received and established this unique program to recognize and thank the nurses nationwide who make a profound difference in the lives of their patients and families.
