Dialysis Clinic receives national award for patient care

Darwin Peterson Award 2019

Dialysis Clinic staff accept their Darwin Peterson Award for peritoneal dialysis from DCI

The Dialysis Clinic located at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital, which is owned and operated by the national non-profit Dialysis Clinic, Inc. (DCI), was recently named the winner of this year’s Darwin Peterson Award for its peritoneal dialysis. This is the clinic’s third time winning the award.

Created by DCI in 1999, the prestigious Darwin Peterson Award is given annually to the facility that demonstrates excellence in all areas, including clinical indicators, data quality, standardized hospitalizations and mortality and patient satisfaction.

BWFH’s Chief of Nephrology and DCI clinic Medical Director J. Kevin Tucker, MD, says he is thrilled to have received this award again. “We are a relatively young clinic,” he says. “We started peritoneal dialysis only about 15 years ago so it’s pretty remarkable that we are a three-time winner of the award.”

For the staff in the clinic, this honor is a testament to how well they all work together as a team to care for their patients. “I am so proud of our entire interdisciplinary team for winning our third Darwin Peterson Award!” says Nurse Manager Terry Moore, RN. “This is truly a team award. Peritoneal dialysis is a nurse driven modality. Pauline Gray, BSN, RN, CNN and Modeleine Georgeon-Etienne, BSN, RN, are both experienced peritoneal dialysis nurses. Peritoneal dialysis is a complex nursing specialty which requires years of practice to become proficient. I would like to thank Pauline and Mode as well as our Dietitian Melissa DeSilva, and our Social Worker Abby DeMille, for their constant commitment to our patients. Thanks also to our nephrologists, Medical Director Kevin Tucker, MD, Mallika Mendu, MD, MBA, Kambiz Zandi-Nejad, MD, and Adam Segal, MD.”
