BWFH welcomes new breast cancer surgeon

Dr. Elizabeth Mittendorf, PhD

Elizabeth Mittendorf, MD, PhD, Rob and Karen Hale Distinguished Chair in Surgical Oncology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, recently began operating at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital.

At BWFH, Dr. Mittendorf will perform standard breast cancer surgeries such as mastectomy, lumpectomy, sentinel lymph node dissection and axillary lymph node dissection. “I am looking forward to integrating with the multidisciplinary team to provide state-of-the-art care to our breast cancer patients,” she says of her new role. “I hope to work with my surgical colleagues to advance our understanding of how to personalize the surgical management of breast cancer based on the biology of an individual patient’s tumor.”

She also serves as Director of Surgical Research at Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center Breast Program, Director of the Breast Immuno-Oncology Program at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Co­-Director of the Breast Cancer Clinical Research Program, Breast Oncology Program at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in addition to being a faculty member at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Mittendorf is a graduate of Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine where she also completed a residency in General Surgery. She then served on active duty in the United States military before completing a fellowship in Surgical Oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Mittendorf also holds a PhD in Immunology from the University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Houston. She is board certified by the American Board of Surgery.

When she is not at work, Dr. Mittendorf enjoys running. In fact, she has completed more than 20 marathons.
