BWFH physicians complete Brigham Leadership Program

Brigham Leadership Program 2018

The Brigham Leadership Program (BLP) is geared towards mid-career physicians, scientists and nursing and clinical directors in a management role who are currently leading teams, projects, divisions, centers, clinics or laboratories. Several Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital physicians, including hospitalist and Department of Medicine Faculty Development Wellness Director Dr. Elizabeth Harry and neurologist and Clinical Director of the John R. Graham Headache Center Dr. Paul Rizzoli, recently participated in the program, as well as orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Eric Bluman, Division Chief of Breast Surgery Dr. Laura Dominici, radiologist Dr. Catherine Giess, Director of Interventional Nephrology Dr. Dirk Hentschel, Chief of Medicine Dr. Scott Schissel and Chief of Anesthesiology Dr. David Shaff.

The BLP is a rigorous leadership development program designed by the Center for Faculty Development and Diversity, the Physicians’ Council and the Brigham and Women’s Physicians Organization in collaboration with Harvard Business School (HBS). The program is designed to support the mission and attainment of Brigham Health strategies and enhance the participants’ leadership capacity and ability to lead complex projects and teams.

For Dr. Harry, participating in the BLP had a big impact. “It was one of the most influential experiences I have had professionally,” she says. “It was an amazing opportunity to connect with peers and mentors, learn exciting new principles to apply to our daily work and explore new possibilities for moving forward. I feel so lucky to have participated and would highly recommend the experience.”

Likewise, Dr. Rizzoli found the program to be beneficial. “The BLP was a high-quality and transformative experience,” he says. “For me, the most important part was the exposure to business concepts; these classes at the business school were both exciting and impactful and will prepare me to contribute more fully to the coming challenges in healthcare.”
