Scott Schissel, MD, PhD, has been selected as the next Chief Medical Officer and Vice President of Medical Affairs at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital, effective August 1, 2021.
In Dr. Schissel’s role as Chief Medical Officer and Vice President of Medical Affairs, he will serve as an advocate for and liaison to the medical staff to ensure that all clinicians have the necessary resources to provide the highest level of patient care. He will be a critical partner with senior hospital administration and department chiefs in guiding ongoing clinical and operational improvement efforts, and in implementing key strategic initiatives.
“The role of Chief Medical Officer and Vice President of Medical Affairs will bring with it many new challenges, but also many rewards,” Dr. Schissel says. “I am looking forward to collaborating with my wonderful colleagues to continue our core mission of providing the best possible patient- and family-centered care to our community and to shaping the future of our organization.”
Dr. Schissel brings a depth of experience and medical expertise which will help guide him in such areas as patient safety and clinical outcomes, infection control, risk management, regulatory compliance, utilization review, patient-family centered care, clinical informatics, clinical program development and external physician and network relations.
“I have been a part of the BWFH community for many years, serving as Chief of Medicine since 2012,” says Dr. Schissel. “I am truly honored to continue in this work alongside such a dedicated team of health care professionals.”
Dr. Schissel attended Cornell University, and is a graduate of the College of Physicians and Surgeons - Columbia University. Dr. Schissel completed both his medical residency in internal medicine and his fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He is also an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.
The search for a new Chief Medical Officer was aligned with Mass General Brigham United Against Racism priorities, BWFH’s own Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee and included a diverse slate of candidates.
