From July 1 to 3, Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital will host three appraisers from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to conduct a site visit as part of the final step in our application for Magnet designation. To prepare, the Department of Nursing recently hosted two events—a mock site visit and a hospital-wide readiness event.

The two-day mock site visit served as a dress rehearsal for those who will be involved during the actual site visit. The mock appraisers overwhelmingly agreed that BWFH is indeed a Magnet organization. They praised the hospital for its clear and strong commitment to patient-centered care and its transformational leadership at all levels of the organization. The surveyors also commented on the teamwork and interdisciplinary collaboration that was on display, as well as strong evidence of shared governance and effective communication.

Cori Loescher, MM, BSN, RN, NEA-BC, Chief Nursing Officer and Vice President of Patient Care Services, says she couldn’t be more proud of the way in which BWFH represented itself during the mock site visit. “All I can say is WOW!!!!! The mock Magnet site visit was a tremendous success and the accolades from our mock appraisers were profuse,” she says. “We have a few things to work on and a little more to practice but we are ready.”

A few days later, the Department of Nursing hosted a hospital-wide readiness event featuring Magnet-themed games, a photo booth and special snacks. Attendees were invited to come and learn more about Magnet designation and gain a better understanding of what to expect during the three-day site visit.

“This is an exciting time for all of us at BWFH. The Magnet site visit provides us the opportunity to showcase the wonderful work being done each and every day. The readiness event was such a fun way to share the importance of connecting with the Magnet appraisal team and proudly sharing stories of excellence in practice and patient care,” says Colleen West, DNP, MBA, RN, CPHQ, Executive Director of Nursing Professional Development, Practice and Innovation.

Tracy Lane, MSN, RN-BC, Nursing Quality and Magnet Program Manager, says, “It was great to see so many faces from different departments learning about the components of the Magnet model. It was a fun way to highlight the interdisciplinary teamwork that takes place in the organization. The Magneteer’s led the game stations and their passion in teaching their co-workers about Magnet has been inspiring.”
