Adjei-Saifah and Metivier named 2021 Compassionate Care Award recipients

Six years ago, the Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital community tragically lost a 2 South inpatient psychiatry mental health worker, Kelly Young, who was known for his compassionate care. He was posthumously awarded the first Compassionate Care Award. Recently, Vincent Adjei-Saifah, MHW, and Elizabeth Metivier, RN, were presented with the Compassionate Care Award for 2021.

Adjei-Saifah and Metivier were selected by a committee of their peers for the award as a result of the compassion they exhibited for their patients over the last year. Both exemplify the foundation on which the award was established by:

  • Communicating sensitively with patients and loved ones
  • Listening carefully, providing emotional support and instilling hope
  • Respecting patients’ values, cultural background, choices and decisions
  • Understanding the significance of patients’ families and communities

Adjei-Saifah’s nomination letter read in part, “Vincent will always try to make the patients feel cared for and is always helping out with their requests, making them feel the staff cares about them and love their jobs. He is compassionate about his care of all the patients he serves.”

Echoing a similar sentiment, Metivier’s nomination read in part, “Elizabeth, from her start on the unit, has been a team player and is so caring and kind to her patients, even the most challenging ones. She just wins them over with her sweet ways. She comes in each day with a great attitude and it shines all day.”

Co-Director of Psychology and Director of Inpatient Psychology and Training Christopher AhnAllen, PhD, was present for the award presentation and said, “It is our privilege to work alongside these peers who demonstrate a commitment to compassionate care through all that they provide for our patients on the unit.”

Also present at the presentation were Compassionate Care Award committee members Rosa Colorado OTR/L, Rickie Rampersad, MHW, and Edward Grant, MHW, as well as Spiritual Care Coordinator Tara Deonauth, M.Div., who provided a special reading about compassionate care.
