BWFH Receives 2020 Scientific Abstract Virtual Competition Award

The Society of Hospital Medicine recently announced the winners of the HM20 Virtual Abstract Competition and BWFH was selected as the winner of the category for ‘Innovation.’

BWFH’s submission, titled Workforce Strategies: Implementing a Triad Leadership Model, was a collaborative effort led by Johanna Baldassari, NP, Chief Advanced Practice Provider with input from Erin O’Fallon, MD, Chief Medical Officer Peggy Duggan, MD, Chief of Medicine Scott Schissel, MD and Chief Nursing Officer Cori Loescher, RN.

According to Baldassari, the goal of BWFH’s publication was to educate hospitalists and hospital leadership on the success that we’ve had by formally incorporating Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) into our leadership structure.

“To have a Triad model at the unit level – an RN unit director, an MD unit director, and an APP unit director working together on shared goals and quality outcomes is unique and not yet widely adopted nationwide,” says Baldassari.  “Ultimately, hospital leadership has to develop a culture where APPs time and expertise are valued – not just by saying they are valued, but by demonstrating their worth through inclusion and engagement with protected time and a formal structure.”

For Baldassari, this was her first publication and one she says couldn’t have happened without the support from the departments of nursing and medicine and her co-authors.  “I’m passionate about supporting APPs and their importance to the success of our organization,” states Baldassari.
