The Accreditation Committee of the College of American Pathologists (CAP) awarded accreditation to Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital’s laboratory based on results of a recent on-site inspection conducted by CAP inspectors. The inspection team included practicing pathology and laboratory medicine professionals from around the country. Recognized for rigorous and robust standards, CAP accreditation elevates quality and mitigates risk, an important way that laboratories can contribute to improve patient outcomes.

The CAP advised Chief of Pathology Anthony Guidi, MD, and Director of Laboratory Services Kristopher Durette of this recognition and congratulated the laboratory for its excellence in the services being provided. Our laboratory is one of more than 8,000 CAP-accredited facilities worldwide.

“Earning CAP accreditation is a testament to the talented team of professionals we have working in our laboratory. Each and every one of our staff are committed to returning accurate results in a timely manner to ensure our patients can receive the care they need. The inspection team was very comprehensive and detail oriented and provided useful feedback which we have implemented to further improve our laboratory services going forward,” says Dr. Guidi.

“The CAP congratulates Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital’s laboratory on its recent CAP Accreditation,” says Richard M. Scanlan, MD, FCAP, Chair of the CAP’s Council on Accreditation. “Your laboratory is committed, as is the CAP, to the constant surveillance of laboratory quality for the benefit of the patient and the physician who treats the patient.”

During the CAP accreditation process, designed to ensure the highest standard of care for all laboratory patients, inspectors examine the laboratory’s records and quality control of procedures. CAP inspectors also examine laboratory staff qualifications, equipment, facilities, safety program and record and overall management. These reviews help verify activities reflect the most recent best practices.

With over 23,000 laboratory participants, in addition to accreditation, the CAP offers proficiency testing/external quality assessment (PT/EQA) programs, quality improvement tools and protocols and guidelines to ensure excellence in all areas across the laboratory. Built on a foundation of pathologist expertise, the CAP partners with laboratories worldwide to elevate the quality of laboratory medicine with best-in-class solutions designed to drive operational excellence, achieve diagnostic accuracy and ensure optimal patient care.
