Orthopaedic & Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation

at Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital

Orthopaedic and Musculoskeletal Services

What to expect

The first appointment is typically an hour long. Your therapist will start by having a conversation with you to learn about your injury/condition, your past medical history and what your expectations are for therapy. The therapist will then perform a detailed exam to help identify your impairments and areas that can be addressed with physical therapy. A plan of care will then be established to help you obtain your goals and improve your physical function and quality of life.

Follow up treatment sessions are typically 30 minutes long and can include strengthening exercises, stretching, movement control exercises, manual therapy, education about your condition and establishing a home exercise program. Our hope is that by the time you are finished with physical therapy, you have decreased pain, improved function and have gained knowledge to promote independence with managing your injury or condition.

What to bring

Dress in loose-fitting clothing that allows for unrestricted movement of the body part that is affected and that also allows for easy visualization of the body part if needed. Also, we may ask you to fill out a questionnaire, so bring glasses if needed.
