Shared Governance

Shared governance is an integral component of professional nursing practice at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital. Shared governance is a process that promotes shared decision-making at the point of care. In our shared governance structure, empowered nurses have a voice in matters involving their professional practice and day-to-day operations on the unit. We believe that providing excellent patient care involves a collaborative team environment.

Our shared governance structure includes valuable members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team. The key components to our successful shared governance model involve teamwork, problem-solving and accountability. The ultimate goal of our shared governance structure is to ensure quality patient outcomes as well as improved staff and patient satisfaction.

Unit Based Councils

Registered nurses at Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital have an active voice in the shared governance process through their unit based councils. The size and structure of the individual unit based councils reflects the unique characteristics of each unit. Members of the unit based council include registered nurses, patient care assistants/unit service technicians and unit secretaries.
