On June 23, runners will gather on Boston Common for the start of the 2019 Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) 10K road race presented by Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Among them will be several runners from Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital.

On Team Saving Second Base will be Abby Almonte, Administrative Assistant to Dr. Matthew Carty. Of her decision to run, Almonte says, “I started working here just about a year ago and since then, I have gained such an appreciation and passion for the work we do. I have also never run a 10K, or 5K for that matter, and I wanted to challenge myself and step outside of my comfort zone doing something I never thought I could accomplish.”

Team BWFH Rehabilitation Services includes three runners from the department: Jared Wydysh, PT, DPT, CSCS, Angela Serig, OTR/L, CHT, CLT-LANA, and Lucia Sloane, PT, DPT. Wydysh says, “I decided to run in the B.A.A. 10K this year because the proceeds go directly towards improving the quality of care for our patients in the Department of Rehabilitation Services. It’s also a way to motivate myself to get back into running, all while doing something fun with my colleagues.”

Director of Radiology Brian McIntosh, BS, RT(R) CRA, is the captain of Team Brigham Health Radiology. “Our team is comprised of Brigham Health radiologists, technologists and family members. We are raising funds which can be used for various research or sundry purposes,” he says. “I ran the past two years and have enjoyed participating in such a phenomenal event while raising funds for various research endeavors.”

Running in memory of their colleague and friend Carl Stewart, MEd, LADC I, who passed away in December of 2018 are several members of the Department of Psychiatry. Team Carl Stewart co-captain and Outpatient Suboxone Social Worker Cindy Nichols, LICSW, says running the B.A.A. 10K this year is very special for her team. “Our team was created by providers within BWFH’s Psychiatry Department to celebrate Carl’s life and work and all that he has contributed to Addiction Recovery Programs at BWFH,” she says. “Carl ran the Evening Treatment Program at BWFH for the past 21 years up until his passing in December. Carl is very much missed by his patients and staff. All funds raised within Team Carl Stewart will be donated to the BWFH Addiction Recovery Fund.”
