At the Royal College of Psychiatrists International Congress, held recently in London, one of Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital’s psychiatry residents Dr. Natalie Feldman presented a poster titled “A Model for Designing and Implementing an Inpatient Peripartum Psychiatry Unit.”

The poster, authored by Dr. Feldman and attending physician Dr. Marcela Almeida, describes the inpatient peripartum psychiatry service which is now open on 2 South at BWFH. “Ours is only the third program of its kind in the United States,” says Dr. Feldman. “The goal of the presentation was to discuss some of the challenges of starting a peripartum service in the United States, and to share our solutions to those challenges. We hope that our service can serve as a model for other hospitals to open similar units.”

In addition to the poster presentation, Dr. Feldman was selected to give a brief oral presentation with a question and answer period called a Rapid-Fire Poster Presentation. “It was a privilege to bring this poster to the Royal College of Psychiatrists meeting,” she says. “There are many more perinatal units in Europe and the UK than in the United States. It was rewarding to share some of the exciting work that’s happening here at BWFH, and to hear more about similar efforts that are taking place overseas.”
