Massachusetts Opioid Screening and Awareness Day – Tuesday, September 22

September is National Recovery Month. On Tuesday, September 22, several Mass General Brigham hospitals are participating in a virtual town hall event supporting Massachusetts Opioid Screening and Awareness Day. BWFH Director of Outpatient Addiction Services Dr. Claudia Rodriguez will present "Buprenorphine Treatment and Experience of a Patient in Recovery" during the event from 9:30 to 10 am.

The event is aimed at decreasing the stigma surrounding opioid use disorder and helping individuals recognize that there are resources available in their community to treat this debilitating illness. Participants will have an option to take an anonymous screening, learn about opioid misuse signs and symptoms, and locate treatment programs in their area. BWFH employees can also find resources and information at the EAP website. To speak confidentially with an EAP counselor, call the EAP at 866-724-4327.

This year, many students of all ages are struggling to adjust between in-person and hybrid learning models and are in dire need of essential education supplies. There will be upcoming drop off days outside the cafeteria or you can contact Katie Plante to pick up your donations directly from your office. For a list of needed supplies, click here. Gift cards and monetary donations (checks can be made payable to "Make Boston Shine Trust") are also greatly appreciated.

COVID-19 Updates

Surviving and Thriving During the Pandemic: EAP Webinar Series

Has the stress of the COVID-19 pandemic hit you hard? Are you struggling financially? Do you find it difficult to work remotely? EAP is here to help you during these difficult times. We have created a webinar training series to support employees and managers’ emotional wellbeing, remote work and financial wellbeing. And if you need to, you can always speak confidentially with an EAP counselor at 866-724-4327.

Reminder: Eye Protection in Clinical Settings

Mass General Brigham’s Universal Mask Policy has been updated to require eye protection in all clinical encounters, and is now the Universal Mask and Eye Protection Policy. This updated policy is consistent with recent recommendations from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, which now recommends universal eye protection, regardless of community prevalence of COVID-19.

  • Universal eye protection gives employees interacting with patients for more than 10 minutes at less than 6 feet additional protection if a patient is not wearing a mask, removes their mask unexpectedly, or if the employee needs to remove the patient’s mask to examine their mouth/throat area.
  • Making this policy apply across all clinical encounters will support uniform practice and is more reliable than situation-specific directives (e.g., adding eye protection when patient is unmasked). This policy therefore applies to all patients, even if the patient has tested negative for COVID-19.
  • Institutions have until August 10, 2020 to implement the updated policy.

For further details please read the full policy.

Should you need eye protection while at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital, you can visit the PPE distribution center in suite 5B anytime between 6 am and 11:30 pm. Distribution center staff are only allowed to issue one set of eye protection per employee and will continue to monitor PPE usage by employee. As a reminder, per Mass General Brigham’s Extended Use, Reuse and Conservation of PPE policy, eyewear can be used without time limit and cleaned and stored as long as they are not damaged and retain their structural integrity. Please note that personal glasses are never suitable for eye protection.
