Construction Update: June 17 to 28, 2024

Third-Floor Hillside Garage

Work continues on underground utilities and the curtain wall, which requires intermittent use of the Whitcomb Avenue entrance through August.

Inpatient Addition

Work is progressing for the inpatient addition with interior work and exterior wall installation ongoing. Staff and patients should expect intermittent disruptions to the loop road during this time. Specifically, construction activities will require the closure of the loop road on Saturday, June 22, and Saturday, June 29, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. During this time, the Whitcomb Avenue gate will be used to access parking behind the hospital. One lane of the loop road will be closed on Monday, June 17, and Tuesday, June 18, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Staff will be on hand to assist the flow of traffic during this time.

Please note, the construction team will conduct a mock evacuation of the inpatient construction site on Friday, June 21, at 11:30 a.m. During the drill, an alarm will be heard and construction workers will evacuate the parking garage worksite. No action is needed by BWFH employees or patients. These are drills designed to prepare Turner Construction staff in the event of an actual emergency.

Street Enhancements

Work to install utilities on Allandale Street will continue through the week of July 8. This work will begin on the inbound lane and will require lane closures between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Centre Street sidewalk repair will take place the week of June 17. This work will require the closure of one lane of traffic between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Installation of a new traffic mast arm at the intersection on Centre and Allandale Streets is complete and the sidewalk in the area is under repair. This work will require the closure of one lane of traffic on Monday, June 17, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Additionally, between Monday, June 17, and Friday, June 21, repairs will be made to the median curb on Centre Street. This work will require the closure of one lane of traffic from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Finally, bike lanes on Allandale and Centre Streets will be temporarily striped the week of June 24 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Blue Bike station is expected to be fully in place later in the summer. “No right turn on red” signage will also be installed and the dedicated right turn only lane will be eliminated. This work will require intermittent lane closures.

All road construction work will have details on site to help direct traffic and minimize disruptions.

Interior and Roof

Work is also underway inside the hospital and on the roof to accommodate the new inpatient addition. Please expect that there will be increased noise and possible disturbances within the hospital while construction activity continues. Individual departments within the hospital that will be directly impacted will be notified of any possible disruptions to operations ahead of time in order to properly prepare and mitigate impacts to patients, visitors and staff.
