Metzger named 2021 Max and Glenna Bermann Radiology Employee of the Year as part of National Radiologic Technology Week celebrations

The Max and Glenna Bermann Radiology Employee of the Year Award is given annually to one individual in the Radiology Department who best exemplifies the qualities of professionalism, patient-centeredness, teamwork, selflessness and self-initiative that are so important to achieving optimal patient care. This year’s recipient is Diagnostic Radiology Student Coordinator Brittany Metzger, RT(R).

At a special presentation hosted by Chief of Radiology Dylan C. Kwait, MD, and Director of Radiology Brian McIntosh, BS, RT(R) CRA, Radiology Program Manager Rakesh Kannan MSHCA, RT(N)(CT) and Diagnostic Radiology Supervisor Michelle Williamson, RT(R), presented Metzger with her award.

Williamson described Metzger, saying, “She is not only an excellent technologist as evidenced by her productivity, efficiency, patient care, image quality, knowledge, skills and ability, but she is also an excellent mentor, instructor and role model for the clinical students that rotate here from Mass Bay Community College and Bunker Hill Community College. Brittany is well-respected by everyone she works with, is very pleasant and extremely reliable. Her dedication to the department is exemplary. She is also capable of working calmly under pressure.”

Williamson went on to read from Metzger’s nomination letter, which detailed her dedication to her role as Student Coordinator:

I don’t recall ever seeing Brittany in over her head. She is always so calming to not only her patients, but her students as well. This is where my fantastic impression of Brittany is felt the most, is with her students. You can’t help but notice how great she develops the students! The final product is evident… they are dependable resources for the Department!

During the event, McIntosh and Dr. Kwait both took the opportunity to thank the entire staff for their work over the past year.

“I want to acknowledge the great work everyone does each and every day. It’s been a challenging year—again. We have seen record volume this year, completing 127,000 exams last year, and we’re growing as a department with more than 100 FTEs for the first time ever,” said McIntosh. “Despite being so busy, we have a lot to celebrate this year—we have a new interventional nephrology room, we’re building a new orthopedics room on the fifth floor, plans are back on track for our new breast imaging center on the fifth floor and we will be getting new ultrasound machines.”

Dr. Kwait echoed McIntosh’s sentiments saying, “All of our patients who had put off their routine care during the COVID-19 pandemic have come flooding back. They did so because they trusted our ability to take care of them safely. That increased volume is incredibly challenging. But we have a shared goal—we are here to care for people in their time of greatest need, when they are at their most vulnerable. We can’t do that unless we are taking care of each other too. I am in awe of the incredible job we have done to care for our patients, and equally in awe of how we care for each other. The future is bright and I am tremendously thankful for everything that you do each day, for your strength, for your resilience and your support of each other.”

The Max and Glenna Bermann Radiology Employee of the Year Award is named in honor of Dr. Max Bermann and Glenna Bermann, who started working at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital in 1972. He was a staff radiologist and she was a radiologic technologist. Over the course of their combined 80 plus years in the Radiology Department, they demonstrated an unwavering commitment to their patients.
