Chief of Radiology named American Society of Emergency Radiology President

Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital’s Chief of Radiology Stephen Ledbetter, MD, MPH, has been a member of the American Society of Emergency Radiology since 1999 when he was a fellow in Emergency Radiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. At this year’s annual meeting, he was elected President.

“It’s a really great organization,” says Dr. Ledbetter of the American Society of Emergency Radiology, which is dedicated to advancing the quality of diagnosis and treatment of acutely ill or injured patients by means of medical imaging. I’m especially looking forward to our next annual meeting, which will be held in Washington, DC in September 2018. In addition to our usual head-to-toe trauma refresher course, and our lectures on medical imaging of the acutely ill, we are planning a special one-day workshop on how to prepare for mass casualty incidents. It’s also the 30th anniversary of the American Society of Emergency Radiology, and so we will be celebrating the important accomplishments of the Society and its membership in advancing care for emergency department patients.”

The society’s goals include:

  • Advancing and improving the radiologic aspects of emergent patient care
  • Establishing emergency radiology as an area of special interest in the field of diagnostic imaging, including sequencing, prioritization and management of the delivery of imaging services
  • Developing educational curricula in emergency radiology for both medical students and residents
  • Providing, through an annual scientific meeting, a mechanism for presentation of scientific information on various aspects of emergency radiology and continuing education
  • Promoting research in emergency radiology by clinical and basic science investigators, including residents and other trainees
  • Acting as the resource body in emergency radiology for those interested in emergency patient care
  • Fostering the development of emergency radiology in other nations and/or regions around the world
  • Developing and recommending standards of care in emergency radiology
  • Publishing a scientific journal for dissemination of emergency radiological, clinical, educational and research education worldwide
