Telesurgeries performed at BWFH add to the learning experience at Harvard Medical School
Dr. Jon I. Einarsson
Targeting physicians, gynecologists and urogynecologists, the course, taught by distinguished Harvard faculty, as well as guest faculty from the Cleveland Clinic in Florida and the Mayo Clinic, covered topics including laparoscopic surgery and suturing, endometriosis surgery, management of pelvic pain, hysterectomy, urogynecology, robotics and more.
The highlight of the event was most certainly the live telesurgeries streamed to the Omni Parker House from Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital, the Cleveland Clinic in Florida and the Mayo Clinic. The procedures included a laparoscopic myomectomy (performed by Dr. Jon Einarsson at BWFH), a laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy, a hysteroscopic surgery (video), a hysteroscopic resection of a large fibroid and a laparoscopic total hysterectomy (performed by Dr. Karen Wang and Dr. Sarah Cohen at BWFH).
Dr. Einarsson says, "The technology is getting better and better." Course participants now can see these surgeries happening in real time in high definition where as just a few years ago footage was grainy. "I can talk with the audience and the audience can ask me questions," he says. The result is a truly interactive educational experience.
