I CARE Award recipient goes the extra mile
At times, there are no beds available on BWFH’s inpatient psychiatric unit. Unfortunately, this means that a patient may have to stay in the hospital's Emergency Department until a bed is made available on 2 South. In this case, the patient, developmentally delayed, was held in the ED for five days while waiting on a bed in the inpatient psychiatric unit. The patient has previously been on 2 South for two to three weeks, and Chris had developed a relationship with this patient. While staying in the ED, the patient refused to bathe himself and was not taking steps to take care of himself.
Dr. Fromson, head of BWFH's Psychiatry Department, asked Chris to go down to the Emergency Department and try to engage with this patient, in hopes of encouraging him to take a shower and clean himself up. The patient, remembering Chris, immediately brightened up and allowed staff to assist him with a shower. The following day, the patient was brought up to 2 South and admitted onto the unit.
When asked how it felt to receive the I CARE Award, Chris says, "It was really quite an honor and it's very nice to be recognized. This patient was not in my care or on my unit at the time I reached out to him. But to me, helping this patient was just a matter of basic care and kindness."
"We are a community based hospital," Chris continues, "and the community trusts us. Working here makes you want to go the extra mile and provide exemplary care to everyone who passes through our doors."
Do you know a BWFH employee who has gone above and beyond to demonstrate BWFH's I CARE standards? To nominate a fellow colleague for an I CARE Award, please visit http://www.faulkner411.org/. A team of colleagues will personally recognize the employee by presenting them with balloons, a thank you card, and a gift certificate redeemable in the cafeteria or Atrium Cafe.
