Get active this summer with Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital and the West Roxbury YMCA
Young or old, fitness is a huge part of staying healthy and enjoying life. "We try and encourage everyone to include more physical activity into their daily lives by showing them that it can be fun and exciting," says Meg Kilmurray, Community Health and Wellness Assistant at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital.
Maybe you like to walk. Maybe you like aerobics. Maybe you aren’t sure what you like. This weekly program runs through the end of September and offers a range of activities for you to try. "It gives people an opportunity to experience some of these classes that they may not want to go to a gym to take part in," says Tracy Sylven, Director of Community Health and Wellness at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital. It’s also a great way to connect with friends and neighbors and enjoy the summer weather.
The program consists of alternating weeks of walking and fitness classes. The walking group meets every other Monday at 10 am at the Jamaica Pond Boat House. Led by a member of Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital’s Community Health and Wellness staff, these fun and informal walks are a great way to enjoy scenic Jamaica Pond while you breathe in fresh air and get your body moving.
On the alternating Mondays, a member of the West Roxbury YMCA staff will lead a group exercise class at the Altenheim German Home located at 2222 Centre Street in West Roxbury. Classes include balance, zumba, movement, tai chi and the popular Star fitness class. Allayne Sullivan, a retired Boston Public Schools teacher who teaches the balance and movement classes, says,"People retire to sit and that’s really unfortunate." She encourages seniors to get out there and get active. "There’s so much to do and so much to enjoy," she says.
Geared toward adults of all ages, but with a focus on seniors, the free Summer Fitness Program is a great way to take that first step toward living a more active, healthy life.
