BWFH Hand Hygiene Survey: The results are in!

The survey did reveal that it continues to be difficult to remind someone else when gaps in hand hygiene are seen. The Hand Hygiene Committee will be working on ways to make not only giving, but receiving hand hygiene reminders a more pleasant experience. The survey also revealed that 98 percent of staff identified "Wearing gloves reduces the need for hand hygiene" as a false statement, however inappropriate glove use continues to be observed during hand hygiene monitoring. Glove use will be an ongoing focus for education.
As a final take-away, in response to the need for patient and family teaching information, the Hand Hygiene Committee will be developing a teaching hand-out to facilitate hand hygiene education for patients and family members. More information will be forthcoming as work on the project progresses.
Finally, there were 51 hand hygiene slogans submitted in the Hand Hygiene Slogan Contest. The Hand Hygiene Committee voted to select the top three slogans and survey participants were invited to cast a vote to choose the winner. The winning slogan, submitted by ICU staff nurse Lorraine Shannon, is "Good Health―It’s in Your Hands!" Shannon received a basket of cool, clean things as a prize. As part of our October Safety Fair, we’ll be conducting another Hand Hygiene Slogan Contest, so start thinking of a slogan you can submit.
