Assistant Director of Pharmacy Services joins BWFH
Brian Zikaras, PharmD
In his new position the Assistant Director of Pharmacy Services, Zikaras helps manage the day to day operations of BWFH's inpatient pharmacy. "The main part of my job is to ensure that our pharmacists verify prescriptions from physicians," Zikaras explains. "Every drug order put in by a physician needs to be verified by the pharmacy before it is administered by a nurse."
Zikaras also helps to ensure that patients are receiving their correct medications and dosages, that prescriptions are being administered properly by staff members, and that patients are having no adverse reactions to their medications. Another major role of Zikaras' position is overseeing the secure stocking of the OmniCell machines found throughout the hospital. These OmniCell machines contain pre-approved medication orders for each BWFH inpatient, and are stocked several times a day.
Zikaras says he was drawn to his new position at BWFH because it would give him a new type of opportunity to explore his prior pharmacy training. He says that the process of verifying prescriptions in his new position is similar to his previous roles at CVS Pharmacy, but that he enjoys the extra added responsibility of taking on more of a managerial role in his new position.
"In the short time I've been here, I've seen that BWFH does a lot to retain its best employees, judging by how long a lot of my fellow employees have been working here," says Zikaras. "I'm enjoying working in an environment where you can really get to know the people you work with and come in contact with on a daily basis."
When not working, Zikaras enjoys exploring Boston with his friends, and in the summertime, he enjoys playing golf.
